Mora's history has several explanations. An area of Mora County in the early days was designated Lo de Mora, thought to refer to the early residents of that name. A different story attributes the name to Mora, Spanish for mulberry, because of the large number of mulberry trees found there. Mora, the county seat, was settled in the early 1830's. It was the site of many skirmishes with Indians. Mora, in the heart of the high country, offers many hunting, fishing and ranching areas.
